To keep costs down try a youth hostel. They often have family rooms and rooms for groups and kitchens mean you can save money on eating out.

In the UK a national trust membership can be a good investment, it gives you free parking and they often have great play areas for children. They can break up long jounreys by car too.

Look out for festivals such as Oktoberfest and plan your trip around it.
